Interview with Thee Eviltones (Jimi-Vocals, Madmanroll-Guitar, Danny Tone-Bass, Tom Vagabond-Drums). Garage rock band from Nottingham UK.

For those who do not know you, tell us about your background: when, where, how did you start?

Thee Eviltones formed in 2007 by the love of garage rock. Our musical influences ranges from 60’s garage rock and surf music to 77 punk rock and 80’s postpunk. However we classify ourselves as a post-modern garage rock nightmare combining demon raising surf and punk guitars with furiously delivered tales of fright and horror, hate and love, life and death delivered at face melting pace by the best-dressed mess in the UK.

Within a few months of forming, we recorded and self-released our first  EP entitled “Introducing…Thee Eviltones” and in 2009 recorded “Telekenetic”, a 7”single released on Dead by Mono Records.. The same year one of our songs was featured on the compilation “Dance with the Werewolf”, released on Rigolboch Ricordz.

In November 2011 came out our long awaited Album LP entitled “In the Shadow of the Beast” released on Dead by Mono Records.

Now you’re promoting your new album… how is that going?

Oh yeah, we have been promoting our debut album titled “In the Shadow of the Beast”, So far we have toured Spain, Portugal and played gigs and festivals all around UK. We are planning a European tour in September/ October 2012. The album has had very positive feedback, we are very happy about the result.

«In the Shadow of the Beast» Why this name?

Firstly the title sounds that comes from a B movie, but in reality we are really living in the shadow of the beast. Now you ask me who the Beast is??? I would say well, that it can be anyone…anyone sees different beasts and leaves different nightmares. So welcome to your nightmare!!!!

Who made the art for the record?

In the Shadow of the Beast artwork was made by Darren Merinuk, we are all very pleased with it.

We can listen to a Spanish guitar, on some songs. How did you integrate that to your psychotic rock reaction?

Basically Madmanroll our guitar player has a really great taste for music; I don’t know how he does that but it really works. I guess the recipe is Spanish guitar with garage rock riffs; he makes Thee Eviltones sound unique, the guy is a genius. He also speaks fluent Spanish!

You made a version to «Paint it black» for this record, Why did you choose that song?

The choice of the song happened naturally as sometimes we play a cover version in our set, we could have done something different, but we thought that we transformed it into our own style, it is just a great song from a great band. So you can’t really go wrong with it. So far we have very positive critics about it and we have great fun playing the song live.

Been on Dead by Mono compilations, tell us where to hear it/download it.

You can find Thee Eviltones records through Dead by Mono Records catalogue and our webpage. If you have trouble to buy things online simply email us and we will sort it out for you.

With which bands you usually share stage?

We shared the stage with a lot of bands during the years. I wouldn’t say that we share the stage with same bands; however there are bands that we have really appreciated sharing the stage with, such as Eighties Matchbox B-line Disaster, Kid Congo Powers, The Gories, The Oblivians, The Bambi Molesters, The Ghastly Ones, The Cosmic Vampires and Electric Eel Shock.

How is the rock ‘n roll scene at Nottingham?

Nottingham Rock ‘n’ Roll scene is very poor; there are a few acts, but not a solid scene where everyone is devoted to rock n roll life style.

The only good thing that happens in Nottingham is Blast Off Festival which is organized by Cherry Fuzz that runs Dead by Mono records.

Saying that there’s a lively music scene however we don’t bother about it, too plastic (whereas we prefer vinyl!)

Mexican bands you know/like?

The bands that come to mind right now are The Belmonts from the 60’s and contemporary bands such as Lost Acapulco, Los Magnificos, Las Vinylators.

Speaking about México, Any plans to visit us during a tour?

We have been envited to play in Chile and Argentina, which we are planning to go in 2013. Mexico would be great we would love to visit and party with you. Anyone invite us we will go…andale andale arriba arribi arriba!!! Hasta pronto!
